Quick start: setup in plain English
These steps will get you from unboxing to receiving your first test payment. Take your time and follow security advice carefully — one small mistake can put funds at risk.
- Unbox and inspect. Open your box in a well-lit place. Confirm packaging seals and contents (device, cable, recovery sheet, manual). If anything looks tampered with, stop and contact the vendor.
- Download Ledger Live. From the official source, install Ledger Live on your computer or mobile device. Ledger Live is the companion app that manages firmware updates, installs coin apps, and broadcasts transactions.
- Connect your Ledger. Plug the device into your computer or pair via Bluetooth if your model supports it. Follow the device prompts — you'll either create a new wallet or restore one from a recovery phrase.
- Choose a PIN. Pick a 6–8+ digit PIN. Do not write it down in obvious locations. The PIN protects the device; after several incorrect attempts the device will factory-reset.
- Write down the recovery phrase. Your device will display a 24-word phrase (sometimes 12 or 18 depending on configuration). Write each word in order on the supplied recovery card. Store this card in a secure, offline place. Do not photograph or store the phrase digitally.
- Update firmware & install apps. Open Ledger Live, follow prompts to update firmware if required, and install coin-specific apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Only install apps through Ledger Live.
- Add accounts & test. Add an account for the currency you want to receive. Send a small test amount first to confirm everything works before moving larger sums.
What's in the box — checklist
- Ledger hardware device (Nano model or other)
- USB cable and any adapters
- Recovery card and quick start guide
- Packaging and seals
Tip: Keep original packaging and serial information for warranty and resale considerations.
Security best practices — do these first
Security is the reason you bought a hardware wallet. The device protects private keys, but your habits determine whether that protection matters. Follow these essential practices:
- Never share your recovery phrase or PIN. Ledger or any legitimate service will never ask for your words or PIN.
- Keep recovery offline. No photos, screenshots, cloud storage, or password managers for the recovery phrase.
- Use multiple secure backups. Consider two separate offline locations (safe, safety deposit box). Do not store all backups in the same place.
- Beware phishing. Bookmark the official Ledger site. Don’t click links in unsolicited messages; verify URLs and certificates.
- Consider a passphrase (advanced). A passphrase adds an extra secret word to your seed, creating a hidden wallet. Only use this if you understand that losing the passphrase means losing access forever.
Warning: Anyone with access to your recovery phrase can rebuild your wallet and move funds. If you suspect exposure, move funds to a new wallet immediately.
Receiving and sending — practical checklist
Receiving
- In Ledger Live choose the account & click Receive.
- Connect and unlock your device; confirm the address displayed on the device matches the app.
- Copy the address only after verifying on the device and share it with the sender.
- Always send a small test amount first for new addresses.
Sending
- Create a transaction in Ledger Live and fill in destination and amount.
- Review fees and the destination address carefully in the app.
- Confirm the same details on your Ledger device screen, then approve to sign.
- Wait for network confirmations; larger transfers may require several confirmations depending on the chain.
Troubleshooting — fast fixes
Device not recognized
Try a different USB port or cable, ensure Ledger Live is up to date, and check OS USB permissions. Reboot your computer if needed.
Forgot PIN
If you forget the PIN, the device will need a factory reset. Restore using your recovery phrase to regain access to funds.
Firmware update failed
Do not disconnect during an update. If it fails, follow Ledger Live prompts. Restoring from your recovery to a fresh device is a recovery option.
Address mismatch
If an address shown in Ledger Live differs from the one on your device, reject the transaction and restart the app. Never accept mismatched addresses.
FAQ — quick answers
Is my recovery phrase the same as a password?
No. The recovery phrase is a master key that reconstructs all your private keys. Treat it with the highest secrecy.
Can Ledger recover stolen funds?
No. Ledger cannot move or recover cryptocurrency. If funds are stolen, use your recovery phrase to secure any remaining funds and contact exchange/platform support where the theft occurred.
What happens if I lose my device?
With your recovery phrase you can restore your wallet on a new Ledger device or compatible wallet. Without the recovery phrase, funds are irretrievable.
Can I use Ledger on mobile?
Yes. Ledger Live is available for iOS and Android. Some devices support Bluetooth; follow setup steps in Ledger Live for secure pairing.
Advanced topics & next steps
- Passphrase (25th word): Adds a hidden wallet layer—powerful but high risk if forgotten.
- Staking & apps: Ledger supports many ecosystems; install only the apps you need and understand staking lockups and risks.
- NFTs & Web3: Use Ledger with trusted marketplaces and always verify contract addresses.
- Multisig: For higher security, consider multisignature setups which require multiple devices/keys to sign transactions.
